Hosting Secret Weapon: Skewers

Did you know skewers aren’t just for grilling anymore?

This secret weapon can be used for brunches, desserts, appetizers, casual dinners and classy gatherings. Now when you think of skewers, the term classy doesn’t usually come to mind… I know, I get it. But I’m here to say, it’s ok!! I think skewer dishes can be fancy! It just depends on what you actually skewer. And like most things, a good presentation can make even the most ordinary things look delicious.

For a christmas brunch last year I skewered powdered sugar donuts together with some Mike & Ike’s and a dab of food coloring to make mini snowmen and they were a hit! I’ve also kabobed some basil, mozzarella balls and cherry tomatoes to make caprese salad skewers. I love a good tortellini kabob and you really can’t go wrong with a nutella and fruit dessert skewer.

Skewers (or kabobs) are so smart, creative and simple. Skewers sticks are easy to grab at the grocery store or even the dollar store, and can last for several events. Plus they’re easy to prepare ahead of time and with a little EVOO, balsamic vinegar, seasoning or lemon squeezed on right before you serve, most dishes really come to life. You could even go all in and have an all kabob party! Everyone brings a kabobed dish to share or bring things that can be skewered and everyone makes their own kabob creation!

Below are some skewer ideas I’ve been loving lately and can’t wait to try at my next gathering!

Try skewering together your next dish and see how it can really elevate it from the classic to something new and fun. And bonus: it’s typically much easier to transport!
